Glenfield was one of the most rapidly developing areas in New Zealand in the early 1970s. Its population leapt from about 5,700 in 1961 to over 22,000 by 1971 as subdivisions spread after the Harbour Bridge opened, and Glenfield Mall arrived in December 1971.

Most homes here are now more than 50 years old, and many still run on switchboards and circuits from that first build. Our licensed electricians upgrade boards, add RCD protection to new and altered circuits, swap old lights for LED and install EV chargers.

Common Home Types in Glenfield

Most Glenfield homes are suburban houses from the 1960s and early 1970s building boom, including the former farm at Marlborough and some state housing, with western Glenfield filled in later. Houses of that age often keep their original switchboard, which may have RCDs on some circuits or none at all, because lighting circuits only came into the wiring rules in recent editions. Fifty years of added kitchens, heat pumps and appliances can leave a board short of space. Rented homes also need compliant smoke alarms on every level and near each bedroom.

What Glenfield Conditions Mean for Your Wiring

Glenfield is hilly, rising to about 83 metres between Colin Wild Place and Chivalry Road, so sloping sections and long driveways affect cable runs to garages and outdoor lighting. Kaipātiki Creek and its bush reserves bring shade and damp to some streets, which is hard on outdoor sockets. Around Glenfield Mall and Glenfield Road, shops and offices add steady commercial work.

Electrician Glenfield FAQs

Is my 1970s Glenfield switchboard still OK?

Many are still working, but boards of that age often lack RCD protection and spare space. We inspect it and tell you plainly whether it can stay, needs RCDs or should be upgraded.

Can you add an EV charger at a Glenfield home on a slope?

Yes. We plan the cable route down the section, run a dedicated circuit from a MEN switchboard and fit Type B RCD protection or an accepted equivalent.

Do I need a CoC for new power points in Glenfield?

Yes. Any fixed wiring work, including new power points, needs a Certificate of Compliance. Replacing an existing socket or light fitting does not.

Can you swap old lights in my Glenfield home for LEDs?

Yes. We replace fittings and check the lighting circuit while we are there, as older homes often have no RCD protection on lighting.
