Test and tag checks that the portable electrical equipment in your Central Auckland workplace is safe to use. We inspect each item, test it with a portable appliance tester, fit a tag showing the test date and give you a register of everything tested. Faulty items are taken out of use and reported to you straight away.
Test and tag in Central Auckland: cafes, renovations and rentals
Central Auckland's work mix means test and tag intervals vary a lot from one client to the next. Cafes and shops along the busy streets of Ponsonby and Parnell run coffee machines, grinders, fridges and power boards that are handled all day, often near water. We set retest dates for that equipment based on how hard it is used, and test before opening so trading is not interrupted.
Grey Lynn and Mt Eden have a steady stream of villa renovations, and building sites are where test and tag matters most. Tools and leads used outdoors and in the damp on construction sites need testing far more often than office equipment, with AS/NZS 3012 guiding electrical safety on those sites. Builders can book us to tag their gear and portable RCDs on site, and any item that fails can often be repaired the same day.
Mt Roskill and Mt Albert have a large rental stock. For landlords who supply heaters, washing machines or other appliances, regulation 26 gives two routes: a current AS/NZS 3760 tag, or supplying the appliance through an RCD-protected circuit or portable RCD. Many older rentals in these suburbs have switchboards with RCDs on only some circuits, so we test what is there and advise which route fits the property. Every item goes on a register with its tag number and next test date.
Local tip: If you run a cafe in Ponsonby or Parnell, book testing before opening time so the espresso machine is never offline during service.
Test and Tag in Central Auckland: Local Conditions
Central Auckland work is mainly offices, shops, cafés and studios, often in multi-tenant buildings. We test around trading hours and work floor by floor if needed.
Homes in Central Auckland
Villas and bungalows on the isthmus were built long before plastic-sheathed cable, so their original wiring was rubber insulated. Where it survives, VIR and TRS cable should be replaced rather than extended, and some insurers may decline cover where wiring is old or unfit. Many of these homes also have a switchboard that has been added to over the decades, sometimes still with rewireable fuses, and with RCD protection on only some circuits or none at all. The wiring rules now require RCD protection on new and altered domestic circuits, so anything we add is protected, but older circuits are not upgraded automatically. State houses in Mt Roskill, Mt Albert and Onehunga are smaller and simpler to work on, with open subfloors and standard ceiling heights, but they are old enough that the same cable and switchboard checks apply. Apartments and townhouses near the centre have modern cabling and bring different limits instead: shared risers, fire-rated walls and body corporate rules about what can be changed.

Test and Tag Central Auckland FAQs
I own a Mt Roskill rental with an old switchboard. Do I need to tag the heater I supply?
Either tag it to AS/NZS 3760 or make sure it is supplied through an RCD-protected circuit or portable RCD. If the board has no RCD on that circuit, tagging or a portable RCD are the practical options.
What happens if an item fails?
It is taken out of use, labelled as failed and listed in your register. We can repair or replace plugs and leads, or you can replace the item.
Will I get a record of the testing?
Yes. You get a register listing every item, its location, the result and the next test date.
